Email Marketing 101 for Tradesmen

Most tradesmen like you didn’t get into the business to write marketing emails. You went to trade school to fix HVAC systems, repair roofs, install electrical panels, or build homes. Marketing probably wasn’t part of the curriculum!

But here’s the reality: email marketing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay connected with past customers and generate repeat business. When done right, it keeps your company top-of-mind without requiring a huge time commitment. Not to mention the high return-on-investment for your marketing dollars.

Why Email Still Works

Despite the importance of social media, email remains one of the most reliable ways to reach customers. Nearly everyone checks their email daily, especially when it relates to their home.

For home services businesses, newsletters provide a direct line to homeowners who already trust you. Someone who has hired you before is far more likely to call you again when they want to upgrade their home or when the water heater starts leaking.

Ultimately, email helps keep that relationship warm (and the maintenance calls coming in).

What You Should Send

A common mistake that we often see is trades-related companies emailing customers only when they want to sell something. That approach gets ignored quickly. Instead, think of your emails as helpful reminders and quick tips.

They don’t need to be long or complicated. A few helpful paragraphs, photos of recent jobs, and a clear message are more than enough. We like to recommend:

  • Seasonal maintenance reminders
  • Home care tips (filter changes, drain care, electrical safety)
  • Limited-time service specials
  • Short explanations of common problems
  • Before-and-after job photos

Keep It Simple and Consistent

You don’t need to send email blasts every week. Seriously, please don't. That would probably annoy your customers!

Most contractors do well sending one to two newsletters per month. That’s frequent enough to stay visible but not overwhelming. The key is consistency. A steady monthly email keeps your business in front of homeowners so that when something breaks, they remember who to call.

Stay Top-of-Mind

You likely already have a list of customers who trust your work. A simple email reminding them that you’re available can lead to service calls months or even years later. Win!
